Eleventh Hour began as an experiment – a plan to create an octet of singers who would meet after school once a week for an hour, rehearsing light-but-challenging choral music. Example: The King’s Singers or Disney’s Voices of Liberty. At the audition, there were eleven singers competing for eight positions. It was so difficult to choose among them that at the last minute everyone was accepted, and thus Eleventh Hour was born.

The size of the group fluctuated from year to year, their rehearsal time expanded, and their vocal style quickly changed from light classical to contemporary acappella, but there has been one constant in Eleventh Hour: a drive to entertain audiences with vocal quality and stage personality.

What makes this group unique is their large degree of student ownership. While they do get plenty of guidance, they really have a large say in their band. They choose music, arrange music, plan gigs, and learn all along the way. This “working band” format is a tool used to educate the members as musicians and as young adults. Eleventh Hour was asked to share this program with the Ohio Music Education Association at their 2007 state conference in a clinic called “Pop Acappella in the High School: Benefits and Start-up Tips.” Over 200 choral educators were in attendance in hopes of beginning similar programs with their own students.

Since its inception, Eleventh Hour has performed all over Dayton including Holidays in the Heartlands and The Grand Illumination. Last year, they were Regional Finalists in the National Competition of High School Acappella, winning awards for Best Solo, Best Vocal Percussion, Best Arrangement, and Outstanding Performance. Performance highlights include sharing the stage with Kenny Loggins, LeAnn Rimes, The Beach Boys, and internationally-renowned acappella group m-pact.

This year sees the release of their third studio recording, Evolution. Eleventh Hour is directed by Brody McDonald, Director of Choirs for Kettering Fairmont High School.
